More Than a Diagnosis: The Story Behind the Elliot Give Back Glove

At Trail Manos, we believe gear can do more than perform on the trail — it can tell stories, build community, and give back in meaningful ways. The Elliot Give Back Glove is a perfect example of that belief in action.

This special edition glove was designed by artist Patrick Hickey and is inspired by his youngest son, Elliot, and Elliot’s journey with Down syndrome (Trisomy 21).

An Unexpected Journey, Met With Strength

A few weeks before Elliot was due, Patrick and his family received unexpected news: Elliot had Down syndrome. Like many families in that moment, they dove headfirst into learning everything they could — preparing themselves as best as possible for what lay ahead.

Elliot arrived six weeks early and was immediately transferred to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, where he underwent life-saving surgery. He spent his first month in the NICU resting, healing, and showing early signs of the strength that would come to define him. Before heading home, his nurses created a keepsake poster with his photo, handprint, and footprints — a small but powerful reminder of just how far he had already come.

That moment was just the beginning.

More Than a Diagnosis

Today, Elliot is a happy, healthy 10-year-old who loves video games, French fries, and Halloween — all year long. He’s surrounded by an incredible support system of healthcare providers, therapists, teachers, paraprofessionals, and a family that includes two older brothers he absolutely adores.

Elliot continues to prove, every day, that he is more than a diagnosis.

A Hidden Detail With Deep Meaning

As a subtle Easter egg in the glove design, the handprint featured on the Elliot Give Back Glove is Elliot’s actual handprint, taken when he was just over a week old in the NICU. What began as a tiny mark on a hospital poster now lives on as part of this glove — a symbol of resilience, growth, and the lasting impact of small beginnings.

It’s a quiet detail, but one that carries immense meaning.

Giving Back to the Down Syndrome Community

This glove isn’t just about telling a story — it’s about supporting a cause.

For every Elliot Give Back Glove sold, 20% of proceeds are donated to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). NDSS works nationwide to advance advocacy, education, research, and resources for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

By purchasing this glove, you’re helping fuel that mission.

Limited Two-Week Campaign

The Elliot Give Back Glove is available as part of a limited two-week campaign, with all orders shipping and arriving before March 21 — Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Our goal is for riders to be able to wear these gloves proudly in support of the Down syndrome community on a day dedicated to awareness, inclusion, and acceptance.

Ride With Purpose

This project represents everything we value at Trail Manos: community, authenticity, and using our platform to make a difference. Whether you’re riding trails, training for your next race, or simply showing support, the Elliot Give Back Glove is a reminder that impact doesn’t stop at the trailhead.

Thank you for riding with purpose. Thank you for giving back with meaning.
